The famous poet Alfred Tennyson wrote “I am a part of all that I have met”. This quote helps me define identity because I believe that my identity is a sum of all that I have seen, experienced and learned from my surrounding. Every single person has a unique identity.
The human identity is a complex thing and quite confusing. The search for purpose and self discovery is one that all people must face. Identity is who a person is, what activities they enjoy, their favourite foods, favourite movies, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
A person’s identity is shaped by many different aspects. Family, culture, friends, personal interests and surrounding environments are all factors that tend to help shape a person’s identity. Some factors may have more of an influence than others and some may not have any influence at all.
To discover one’s identity becomes a journey of self-exploration. You might venture from one extreme to the other while finding your true identity lies somewhere in between. Hence, once you have determined your values, abide by them. Whenever you violate your values, you weaken your sense of self.
